The Innovation Station

Branson's desire for space travel derives from his youth, where as a 19 year old, he along with millions witnessed the moon landings. It was from this point his desire to enter space was born and has stuck with him despite the many elements of Virgin's eco system and the inevitable distractions that they bring.

His interest in the concept of space travel continued into adulthood, and after the formation of Virgin. Following a visit to the Rotary Rocket Company project in Mojave CA in 1995, Branson formalised Virgin’s interest in the field of space transportation and registered Virgin Galactic at Companies House in London, March 1999.

Mojave CA SpaceShipTwo achieves Mach 1.22 during its first rocket powered flight, becoming the first commercial vehicle since the Concorde to break the speed of sound. This important milestone officially marks Virgin Galactic's entrance into the final phase of vehicle testing prior to the first commercial service from Spaceport America in New Mexico.
